From IT to clean energy, Burnaby’s expanding industries and global connections make it a prime location for businesses looking to thrive in the new economy.

As the third fastest-growing city in the province, Burnaby is continuing its evolution into being a major economic force. With rapid growth, a diverse industry landscape and a spirit of innovation, combined with proximity to the Pacific trade gateway, the city is prepared to cement its status as an internationally recognized business hub.

It’s clear that this growth offers significant opportunities for businesses of all sizes. With a population now exceeding 270,000, Burnaby’s expanding market means more customers, more talent and more opportunities.

With over 120 languages spoken, the city’s diverse population brings a rich mix of people, ideas and perspectives to the community. The economy is equally diverse with the city hosting a range of industries, including information technology, film production, health care, manufacturing and more. This multiculturalism combined with the wide spectrum of business provides a dynamic environment in which to prosper.

Access to major highways, ports and airports makes the city a good location for businesses with international ambitions. To support this, the Burnaby Board of Trade’s Pacific Gateway Program enhances connections between the business community and industries across the Asia-Pacific. By focusing on trade, investment, education and cultural exchanges, this program helps integrate Burnaby more deeply into the global market, creating opportunities for collaboration and growth.

As Burnaby continues to grow, several key industries stand out with significant potential for expansion. Information technology, biotechnology, health and life sciences, film and digital media, education, environmental technology and tourism are among the sectors poised for strong growth. Burnaby is also seeing increased demand in finance, professional services and management.

What’s exciting is that these industries align with the city’s core values of sustainability and enhancing quality of life. These sectors, often part of the “new economy,” offer low environmental impact while providing diverse job opportunities. They’re also mobile, highly reliant on skilled labour and sought after by cities globally.

The board is proud to support these industries through initiatives like the annual Clean Energy Summit, which is fast becoming one of the largest clean energy events in the province.

A critical element to business growth is workforce. Burnaby is well positioned to meet the needs of businesses seeking talent with its diverse and skilled population. The city’s educational institutions further strengthen this talent pipeline.

Through BurnabyWorks, we collaborate closely with educational institutions and businesses to facilitate workforce development and ensure that companies have access to the skilled professionals they need to grow.

Now is the perfect time to be part of Burnaby’s future.
